  • Before Ancient Egypt became an empire, it was divided into two regions: Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. This division also included the Nile River Delta. The Upper and Lower Kingdoms were determined by the flow of the Nile River. Upper Egypt was in the south, while Lower Egypt was in the north. Egypt is located in northeastern Africa, and the Nile River flows from south to north through the entire length of the country.

  • The Nile River is approximately 4,100 miles long, making it the longest river in the world. The Nile has three main seasons: Akhet, which is the flooding season; Peret, the planting season; and Shemu, the harvesting season. The flooding of the Nile occurs from June to September. By the end of this period, the Egyptians have enough crops to sustain them through the fall and winter.

  • The Nile River provided many valuable gifts to the ancient Egyptians. When the Nile flooded, it covered the fields on both sides with a rich brown mud called silt. This silt was very fertile and helped grow crops like wheat, barley, and vegetables. The mud from the riverbanks was used to make bricks for building. The papyrus plant was another important resource; it was used to create paper, baskets, rope, and sandals. Baskets, rope, and sandals were essential items for the daily lives of the Egyptians.
