It was a kingdom, small but happy, for the king was just a king, a man. His wife had given birth to four strong sons, but in the kings kingdom, they had been forced to ride into battles. One by one, all four princes died, leaving the king only one heir. His infant grandson.
the king’s wife went through so much grief, as did the mother of the young prince, and the king was left with only the child for company. He remarried to another princess. he died shortly after, but with still a year left before his grandson was old enough to take the throne. The queen, his step-grandmother, took his place
And so one night, the prince and the farmer’s daughter raced away on horseback, stopping only at midnight to sleep in the shade of a giant yew tree.
The prince had fallen in love. She was only a farmer’s daughter. The queen, however, did not like the match and tried making the prince marry her. He vowed to run away with the beautiful farmer’s daughter and return on his eighteenth birthday to free his people from the evil queen.
They slept through day and night. The prince woke. “Arise, my beloved,” he whispered to the farmer’s daughter, But his beloved did not wake. He shook her, and it was only as she slumped back in the moonlight that he noticed the blood on the ground. “The queen!” cried the prince. “The queen is responsible for this!”
The subjects stormed the queen’s castle grabbed her then burnt her alive. When the villagers lit the flames on the stake to burn her alive, the yew tree reached in and saved her. He took her and carried her far away so that the villagers would never find her. The prince killed the farmer’s daughter, not the queen.
