  • No, with Jabra around no animal can get into the field; he'd rip it to shreds. I must have been mistaken. Now there's no sound at all.
  • There is no other way!
  • Halku came in to the house and said to his wife, Munni to keep the money for the rent of the land ready to give to the landlord. But then Munni asked -
  • But we only have 3 rupees, now if you give the 3 rupees then from where will the blanket come? How are you gonna get through these January nights?
  • Jabra! Jabra!
  • Come on. give the money to me, We'll manage. I'll figure out some other plan to get the blanket
  • Sadly, Halku said -
  • Fine here's the money but atleast give up farming this time. If you work as a hired labourer you'll atleast get enough food to eat from it. Fine work, farming someone else's land
  • Then I'll have to put up with this abuse.
  • In the dark january night, Halku lay on a bamboo cot wrapped up in his old shawl, shivering with his dog Jabra...
  • From tommorow on stop coming with me or the cold will get you. We'll get through this night somehow.
  • Halku tried to coax her... But failed
  • Another hour passed. Halku leaned back to look at the skies. How much of the night was still left! The dipper has not yet climbed half the sky. The night would last three hours or so.
  • Close to Halku's field there was a mango grove. Halku thought,
  • The bitter truth in Halku's words came charging at Munni like a wild beast. She went to the niche in the wall, took out the rupees and handed them over to Halku. Halku got out of his house and gave the money he saved up pice by pice for the blanket to the landlord.
  • Jabra had found a bone and he was chewing on it. Halku set his fire down on the ground and began to gather leaves. In a little while the fire was burning branches.
  • Well, Jabra, you're not cold now, are you?
  • Jabra looked at Halku with eyes overflowing with love. Halku hugged Jabra tightly although Jabra's body gave off some kind of stink. Halku made Jabra fall asleep. Suddenly Jabra picked up the noise of some animal. Springing up, he ran out of the shelter and began to bark. Halku whistled and called Jabra many times. But Jabra went on barking.
  • Jabra gave a loud bark and ran towards the field. Halku realized that this meant a pack of wild animals had probably broken into the field. Halku began to hear the sound of nibbling.
  • Halku and Jabra went into the orchard and gathered leaves to warm up with. Under the trees it was pitch dark, the bitter wind blew, buffeting the leaves, and drops of dew dripped from the branches.
  • If I go and get a pile of leaves I can make a fire of them and keep warm. If anybody sees me gathering the leaves in the dead of night they'll think it is ghost. Of course there's a chance some animal's hidden in my field waiting, but I can't stand it any longer.
  • Jabra barked as though to say How could I feel cold now?
  • Jabra went on barking and did not come to him. Then again there was the sound of munching and crushing in the field. He could not have been mistaken this time. It really hurt to think of getting up from where he was. It was so comfortable there.
