DAMEDA!! DAMEDA!!! He screeched at me. His whole body was shaking with fury. "No fire, understand?"He started drawing shapes in the sand. A hill and a smaller one next to it, then a line straight through. He pointed to the cave next to me. "Kenuske, I,You boy, here.
Micheal sees the boat
IM HERE!! IM HERE!!!
For the rest of the day, I stayed in my cave. I sat there trying to gather my thoughts. How was I going to get off this island unless I could get the attention of some passing ship? I curled up in my cave, closed my eyes, and wished myself home. I spent the rest of the night cursing the horde of insects wirring around me.
Michael sees another boat
Dameda.
One day, after yet another fruitless morning of watching the hill, Stella and I were coming out of the forest when I saw something lying in the sand. At a distance, it looked like just another piece of driftwood. When I walked closer, I noticed that it was not a piece of driftwood at all, but a roll of rush matting. Inside, and neatly folded, was a white sheet. He knew! "THANK YOU," I shouted. "THANK YOU SO MUCH!"

The next morning, I was on the top of my "Watch hill", when I saw the long bulky profile of a supertanker. There was no mistake. "I'm here! I'm here!" I kept shouting until my throat was raw. I did not turn. As I stood on the summit of my Watch-hill, my despair was replaced with anger. If only I had been allowed to have my fire, they would have seen me. I promised myself I would never let another chance go by. I would make a fire and light it when the chance came.
One morning, I emerged from my cave, and there it was! A boat! Some kind of Chinese junk, but it was still a boat. I ran helter-skelter down the beach and screamed and shouted for all I was worth, but it was hopeless. Then I remembered. My fire! I ran all the way to my Watch Hill without stopping. I readied my cache of dry leaves and prepared the fire-glass. It seemed an age, but there was finally a wisp of smoke. I started to blow life into it. That was when I saw his feet.
"Dameda," he said quietly, and walked away. I wanted to defy him. I crossed over his line. "See that old man? I've crossed over your silly line. And now I'm going to swim, " I shouted. I swam furiously and trashed around the sea. That was when I felt it. A searing, stringing pain at the back of my neck, then another one in my foot. A large, translucent jellyfish was floating beside me. I was going to die, I was going to drown, but I didn't care. I just wanted it to stop. Death I knew would stop it.
