  • Slide: 1
  • This is Anna, and she just moved from Chicago to the small town of Fairhaven. She has been enrolled in Fairhaven high school for a month so far and is loving it!
  • Slide: 2
  • Anna was super drawn to science and spent most of her time at Fairhaven in the science lab with her favorite teacher, Mr. Patel.
  • Slide: 3
  • Anna, our next project for science club is going to be seeing different mutations in the plants around our school!
  • Yes! This is exactly what I am interested in! I am all in on this project.
  • Slide: 4
  • So Anna and her lab partner, Jake went off into the woods to collect leaf samples for their project.
  • Let me know when you found 35 leafs and then we will have enough.
  • Okay
  • Slide: 5
  • But when Anna was looking at the files, she noticed that some of the plant cells had a small mutation in their DNA that called the cardiac glycolisis that made the plant poisonous to not be there anymore. This was causing the plant to not be poisonous at all.
  • Hey Jake, come look at this.
  • Huh! Thats weird, probably just a fluke in the mutation

  • That night, Anna couldn't sleep. She tried to believe Jake that it was just a fluke, but this wasn't a normal mutation. Instead of the gene being replicated or added in, this gene that made this plant poisonous had been removed entirely. Anna couldn't help but wonder if something or someone had anything to do with this.

  • Anna's heart pounded as she stared at the results again and again. She had gone back to the woods to collect more samples. This mutation wasn't a fluke, it was spreading. The poisonous gene was missing in 95 percent of the leafs she tested, which caused the genome of the plant to be completely different.
  • NO POISON PRESENT IN LEAF CELLS.

  • Anna decided to email AgriLabs, the company closest to that patch of leaves, to see if they knew anything. She explained that a naturally poisnous plant had become safe to eat because a nucleotide was removed from the plants DNA, and the whole ecosystem was being affected.

  • Mr. Patel, you don't understand! Monarch butterflies are usually the only ones able to eat those plants but now that beetles and ants can, they are always feeding on them. This can cause the whole ecosystem to shift.
  • I understand completely Anna. We will see what they say to your email and take further steps from there.

  • Soon enough, Anna got an email from AgriLabs denying all accusations she had made. Anna was confused but she had a gut feeling that they were lying to her. She needed to find out more.

  • Anna wasn't going to give up. She knew they were hiding something and was going to find out what. She headed out to AgriLabs to try and sneak in and find what they were doing to those plants.

  • I am going to kick down this door!

  • What is this place?

  • Anna is searching through each drawer hoping to find something that will help her. But then, she does! She found file with the proof that they were modifying the plants.

  • I am going to take a picture of this and send it Mr. Patel! This is important information and I need expose AgriLabs.
  • WE ARE MODIFYING THE PLANTS

  • Mr Patel, I don't know what to do with this information I found in their file. I don't think its right to stay silent.
  • I totally understand how you feel Anna. How about you submit an article to "The Nucleus" our biology themed website

  • So, Anna started to write about how this was so wrong for the environment. She explained that natural selection usually causes natural mutations and unnatural mutations in the plants cells can cause irreperable damage to the different species in that ecosystem.

  • After reading the article, the police of Fairhaven decided to dive in to a offical investigation of AgriLabs, to find out if they were really modifying the plants.
  • POLICE OF FAIRHAVEN. PLEASE OPEN UP WE HAVE A WARRANT.

  • The invesyigation was found true and AgriLabs was shut down permamently. They dug out the plants that were modified, and replanted them!

  • Anna had solved the problem! Not only did AgriLabs stop modifying the plants and harming the ecosystem, but Anna also became captain of her science team and everyone thought she was cool.
