“I do not know what I am afraid of; all I know is that I had a bad dream. I dreamt you returned from the town, and when you took off your cap I saw that your hair was quite grey.”
“Whose knife is this?”
In the town of Vladimir lived a young merchant named Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov. He lived with his wife and children. His wife told him about a dream she had before he left to the Nizhny Fair.
On his way to the fair, he met a merchant. They had some tea together, and then went to bed in adjoining rooms.
Two soldiers stopped him and asked questions about the merchant he has stayed the night with because he was found dead. The officers searched his bags and found a bloody knife.
Aksionov could not prove that he was innocent so he was sent to siberia.
After 26 years, Aksionov met Makar Semyonich the man who killed the merchant Aksionov was accused of killing. Makar was trying to escape through tunnels but Aksionov did not say it was him.
Makar apologized to Aksionov for making him suffer all this time. But when the order for his release came, Aksionov was already dead.
