They are in the meeting. Ralph and Jack are telling the others that they are indeed on an island and that there is wildlife for them to hunt. They sort of begin making a plan for the time they'll be staying there.
The six year old boy says that he saw a beastie on the island. That he saw it at night and it can disappear. This causes doubts and uneasiness among the youngest so the oldest boys try to assure them that there is no such thing. They begin to calm down after being reassured but the weariness is still there.
Then they suggested that they build a fire at the top of the mountain to catch the attention of any possible sailors or pilots.
They all begin cooperating to build the fire. The youngest of the boys would help with getting small sticks to add onto the pile while the older boys would go for the bigger pieces. Eventually they managed to make a big pile for their fire. They light the fire using Piggy's sunglasses to reflect the light of the sun into the pile. Despite their efforts, the fire quickly died out.
An an attempt to rekindle the fire, the boys end up setting a few trees ablaze and the fire expands. Piggy gets furious from this as he was trying to make them understand how reckless they were being.
Piggy tells them angrily that the little boy who was mentioned the beastie was playing by the fire is now gone. The little boy died.
