- Why can't I just be smart?
- I don't know, an inkblot.
- Charlie, we're going to do a series of tests. First tell me what you see on these papers.
- A maze?
- Ok Charlie, now you're going to race Algernon, who's in this box. You have a maze to complete on paper before he finishes the maze in the box
- Algernon
- Are you ready Charlie?
- I guess so.
- Mrs. Kinnian said it was a good idea.
- Charlie gets introduced to these doctors after his teacher, Mrs. Kinnian tells him about an opportunity to make his smart. Charlie goes in for a bunch of tests.
- Okay, I still can't write well though.
- This is where you write your progress reports. Write about everything and anything.
- Charlie is supposed to race Algernon through a maze. Algernon wins but he has alreday had the operation.
- The Algernon-Gordon Effect: A study of structure and function of increased intelligence
- I can't get emotional. These are the facts and results and there's nothing I can do about it.
- Charlie is about to get his operation done and he's remembering what his teacher told him; to stay positive.
- Dr. Strauss introduces the progress reports and teaches Charlie how to look up words he doesn't know how to spell using a dictionary. Charlie seemed hesitant but went with it. He wrote about his races with Algernon, the factory, his friends and how his starts to notice an improvement.
- Charlie became so smart and changed so much, people didn't know what to think. He wasn't allowed to see Algernon anymore because he was having issues. Charlie caught on and eventually started his own research to figure out why this was happening. He wanted to know what would happen to him soon.
- While Charlie's brain began to deteriorate once again he lost all motivation to do anything. His land lady was worried, Mrs. Kinnian was worried but the only thing Charlie was worried about was the flowers for Algernons's grave. He knew he tried everything he could to not decline but unfortunately science is sometimes out of our reach.
