- Hard Rock was known to not put up with anyone. He was tough and didn't care about anything. He once smacked the captain of the prison with a dinner tray. Hard Rock was a crazy man.
- "And then the jewel of a myth that Hard Rock had once bitA screw on the thumb and poisoned him with syphilitic spit." -Alliteration
- Ahhh! Hard Rock bit my thumb. I think I'll get syphilitic spit.
- They wanted to see if they could tame Hard Rock, so they performed lobotomy on him. Lobotomy changed Hard Rock. He began to become emotionless.
- "His eyes empty like knot holes in a fence."-Simile
- Hard Rock was not the same as he was. He was not all mentally there. He used to be their ideal, he used to be someone that would do things that other prisoners didn't have the guts to do. But now it takes him 3 minutes to say his first name.
- "When they brought Hard Rock back,Handcuffed and chained, he was turned loose..." - Imagery
- Hard Rock was very aggressive; he didn't care who got in his way. He had bitten the thumb of a prison guard and got him very sick. Hard Rock did what he wanted, and many called him the Destroyer.
- Lobotomy took over Hard Rock. He was empty, emotionless, and the author compared his new personality to the knots in a wooden fence.
- When he returned from the procedure , he was handcuffed and had chains around his ankles. The guard was asked to release him or "turn him loose" and he just walked away. No emotion, no fight, no drive. The before and after Hard Rock is completely different.
