  • "A Summer's Reading" is actually a short story by Bernard Malamud, not Raymond Carver. The story is about a young man named George Stoyonovich who has recently dropped out of high school and spends his days in his apartment building's courtyard in Brooklyn, New York.
  • One summer day, Mr. Cattanzara, a neighbor who is impressed with George's reading habits, challenges George to read a list of books and promises him a weekly payment for each book he finishes. George accepts the challenge and begins to read, but he soon realizes that the task is much harder than he anticipated.
  • As George struggles with the reading, he becomes increasingly isolated from his friends and family. He begins to see the world in a new light and feels like he doesn't belong in his current surroundings. As the summer comes to an end, George has only read a few books on the list, but he has gained a new appreciation for the power of words and the value of education. In the end, George leaves his neighborhood and heads west to start a new life. The story highlights the struggles of a young man trying to find his place in the world and the transformative power of literature.
