Grenouille starts his endeavor to learn the scent-making techniques that Baldini, his former employer, did not teach him.
Grenouille quickly comes to the conclusion that humanity and all of its weird habits were his real enemy in this world. Not out of some illusion of guilt or out of fear of God, but out of a selfish desire to isolate himself altogether. He travels, looking for an area where there are no people at all.
I must leave these naive, stinking people and find a way to make new scents.
Wow! This looks like the best place for me to stay, devoid of all human interaction.
Grenouille finds a cave near the summit of Plomb du Cantal, where he isolates himself from society. He lives alone, spending his days experimenting with scents and becoming increasingly obsessed with creating the perfect fragrance. Grenouille the Great had risen.
As Grenouille continues to live in isolation, he becomes more detached from humanity. He no longer desires human companionship and is content to live alone with his experiments. He compares how people seek solitude in religion to himself, living in solitude for his own enjoyment.
Living for my own enjoyment in solitude is amazing. I wonder why people live in solitude for God.
Unfortunately for Grenouille, his lack of scent was suffocating him..
Grenouille leaves his isolation and makes his way to a city. There he tells the people that he was kidnapped to explain his terrible appearance.
Yes! I can use this naive fool and make my human scent!
I need your help sir! I have just been kidnapped. I can make you a scent so you will smell better.
Interesting... alright, I guess you can come with me. I need someone to run my experiments on anyways.
Grenouille not only wants to understand and learn scent, but also learn about himself and his enjoyment. He now has goals to reach.
The lord granted Grenouille a makeover, and allowed him to use his lab. Grenouille then creates his human scent.
I've done it! I've created the human scent!
From the creation of the scent, Grenouille uses it to blend in and manipulate people, finally being able to fully resemble being a human.
Grenouille blends in at a wedding using his new scent. He starts to insinuate that God stinks, and he himself smells better and is better than Him.
Wow, even God himself stinks. I am better than God, and I can now manipulate people with my amazing scent(s).
Grenouille's self-awareness increases as he matures.
