- Also known as the Ordinance of 1787, the Northwest Ordinance established a government for the Northwest Territory, outlined the process for admitting a new state to the Union, and guaranteed that newly created states would be equal to the original thirteen states.

- During the Revolutionary War, farmers were promised that they did not have to pay taxes and other debts on their land. However, these promises were not kept. So, numerous western Massachusetts farmers rebelled by not letting judges enter the courthouses. Because of this American leaders created the Constitutional Convention which led to the writing of the US Constitution.
