  • Stage 1: The Molecular cloud
  • Stage 2: The T-Tauri Phase
  • Stage 3: Main Sequence Stars
  • A star begins its life as a giant cloud of gas. Star form inside dense concentrations of interstellar gas and dust known as molecular clouds. The day these stars are born they fall onto the main sequence on the H-R diagram, which is the straight line on the diagram.
  • Stage 4: Expansion into Red Giant
  • A young star begins to produce strong winds, which push away the surrounding gas and molecules. This allows the forming star to become visible for the first time.
  • Stage 5: Fusion of Heavier Elements
  • Eventually, the young star reaches hydrostatic equilibrium in which its gravity compression is balanced by its outward pressure, giving it a solid shape. The star then becomes a main sequence star. After a star uses up all of its hydrogen core, it leaves the main sequence an moves toward the red giants.
  • Stage 6: Death/'Compact Object
  • Once all of the hydrogen in the star's core is converted to helium, the core collapses on itself, causing the star to expand. As it expands, it first becomes a sub-giant star, then a red giant. Red giants have cooler surfaces than main sequence stars. On the H-R Diagram the oldest stars on the main sequence peel off and star to get bigger but they lose their temperature that they had on the main sequence
  • As it expands, the star begins fusing helium molecules in its core, and the energy of this reaction prevents the core from collapsing. Once helium fusion ends, the core shrinks, and the star begins fusing carbon. Iron fusion absorbs energy, so the presence of iron causes the core to collapse. The implosion creates a supernova.
  • The death of a start results in a luminous stellar explosion. A Supernova explosion is one of the brightest events in the universe. Exactly how a star dies, depends in part on its mass.
