  • Hi Everyone and welcome to the Into the Wild Survival Series. Today we are going to discuss the importance of fire and some of the conventional and not so conventional methods to build a fire.

  • That's right , Paul. Fire provides warmth, a means to cook food, sterilize water and tools, signal help, and ward off dangerous predators including bears.So, when you are headed into the backcountry for a weekend or extended trip make sure you have the skill and necessary tools to build a fire.
  • Another method you might want to consider is the use of steel wool and a battery. This method can be used as a backup if other methods fail. Plus, steel wool and a battery are light so they won't add any unnecessary weight to your pack. Here's how it works:
  • When using the steel wool and battery method, be sure to cover your loose batteries with electrical tape to prevent accidental fires wether you are storing baterries in your pack or at home. And never store batteries and steel wool in the same place.
