Mom, do you mind explaining what Cross-Contamination is to me?
Of course honey, lets start of with the basics.
Why is avoiding cross-contamination important. I don't understand.
Sweetie, preventing cross-contamination is very important because it stops you from getting foodborne illnesses. Trust me, it does not feel good to get foodborne sicknesses.
Cross-contamination is the movement of harmful bacteria from a person, object, or thing, to another
Using the same equipment usedfor raw meats and other foods such as cuttingboards, knifes, and rags, is also a common example of cross-contamination.
Ohhh I get it, the transfer of the bacteria from one food, perhaps, to another can get you sick. But are the biggest examples of cross contamination?
The best example I can give of cross contamination is touching raw meats thenhandling vegetables or other foods without washing hands between tasks.
There's a trend I am noticing. Raw meats and poultry are the foods that infect other foods with their bacteria. Am I correct?
Yes honey, you're correct. When dealing with raw meat, bacteria transfers from your hands or objectsto the food and causes food-borneillnesses.
So I should wash all my kitchen utensils and my hands in between dealing with different foods?
Yes of course. Washing hands frequently betweencooking tasks and washing utensils are the best ways to ensure safety from cross-contamination.
Thank you so much mom, I finally get it.
No problem honey. Always remember to clean and sanitize counter tops while also changing cutting boards between foods. Love you, be safe.
