Storyboard Description

Bob in his snazzy vest introduces chemistry.

Storyboard Text

  • Hi, my name is Bob and I am here to teach you about chemistry as a science. Chemistry is the study of matter and how it interacts with energy. Chemistry is everywhere, because everything is made up of chemicals, including the bricks in this building, the concrete of the sidewalk and even the air we breathe.
  • There are many branches of chemistry, including metallurgy, which studies the metals in the bench and lamp post, thermochemistry, which studies how the lamp flame burns, and polymer chemistry, which studies organic materials such as the rayon fibers in my snazzy vest.
  • Oh, yeah?
  • Pharmacy
  • Many businesses and industries require knowledge of chemistry. Pharmacists need to know how to measure precise amounts of drugs. Gardening centers need to know about fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Hardware
  • Gardening
  • Many chemicals come from minerals found in rocks, sand, and the ocean. When the ocean evaporates, it leaves behind deposits of salt and other minerals.
  • Sand is made of silicon dioxide, which is the source of glass and silicon chips for computers.
  • Many minerals come from rocks, such as copper ores like chalcopyrite, azurite, and malachite. They have to be mined and refined to turn them into useful metals.
  • Everything we make either has to be grown or mined out of the Earth. Modern mining works with environmental scientists to preserve nature.
