I'm going to teach you the ABC's and eventually you will learn how to read.
S-a-d, sad
Good job Frederick.
What are you doing?? Teaching Frederick to read?? That is completely unlawful and unsafe.
At one point during his slavery, Frederick Douglass lived with a couple named Mr. and Mrs. Auld. Mrs. Auld wanted to teach Frederick the ABC's (and how to read), but she had to do so secretively.
Wow, Is What Mr. Auld said true? He's so passionate about only allowing me to be his slave. Why can't I learn how to read?
Pretty soon, Frederick was already spelling out three-four letter words. He was progressing very quickly and Mrs. Auld was happy with her work.
I think I finally understand the white man's power to enslave the black man. I've been stuck for all these years, but I'm going to change that.
Unfortunately, around this time, Mr. Auld found out what was going on, and at once forbade Mrs. Auld to instruct Frederick further, telling her that it was unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to read. Mr. Auld went on to say that teaching Frederick to read would forever unfit him to be a slave and it would make him discontented and unhappy.
Frederick took lots of time to process what Mr. Auld had said, and furthermore what it really meant. Mr. Auld's words sank deep into his heart and called into existence an entirely new train of thought. Frederick started thinking very differently from a slave all the sudden.
He realized how harsh slavery truly is, and that he had the opportunity to free himself from it. Something that to Mr. Auld was a great evil, was to Frederick a great good. Mr. Auld's statements had only served to inspire Frederick with a desire and determination to learn.
The thought of losing the aid of his kind mistress made Frederick very sad, but he was gladdened by the invaluable instruction he had gained from his master. Frederick was going to teach himself how to read.
