Mama's husband, the head of the Younger family, died recently, and the family will receive $10,000 from his insurance. Walter wants to turn it into a liquor store, Beneatha plans to put it into a medical school, and Mama isn't sure what she'll do with it.
CLIMAX
The Youngers, a working-class Black family, face economic hardship as well as racial prejudice. Walter believes that no one is paying attention to his vision for the liquor store. He wants to get ahead in some way, but Mama won't give him the funds to do so. Instead, she goes out and buys a house in a predominantly white neighborhood, which could be dangerous.
FALLING ACTION
Ruth learns she is pregnant; Mama puts down a down payment on a house; Mama gives Walter the remaining insurance money; and Walter invests the money in the liquor store venture.
RESOLUTION
Bobo informs the Youngers that Willy has stolen all of Walter's insurance money; Asagai makes Beneatha realize that she is not as self-sufficient as she believes. Worse, Walter never put aside the $3,000 he was supposed to put into the bank for Beneatha’s medical schooling.
Walter declines Mr. Lindner's offer to stay in the apartment; the Youngers relocate to their new home in the white neighborhood; and Beneatha finds new strength in Asagai.
Walter realizes he can't sell his pride for money and tells Lindner to go away. Mama returns to pick up her plant, which represents her dream of a happy, content family in a home they can call their own, as the Youngers leave the apartment in a celebratory mood.
