  • Katie and her brother John wait for the bus to make their journey from home in North Carolina to the feilds in Michigan to begin the seasons work for their struggling family.

  • Hey, wait up!
  • On the long bus ride to Michigan, Katie refuses totalk to her brother because she believes it's his fault they have to leave home to work. However, John is taking the blame because he already feels bad enough for his parents and doesent wan't Katie to get mad at them for having to go to Michigan.

  • No, just a little longer we need this for our family.
  • When they are finally arriving Katie decides to talk to her brother. She repeats how she doesn't want to go and work in Michigan and notices it's starting to rain, which only makes her more upset. Her brother Just tells her that they need to do this for their family and that she should stop complaining.

  • I'm so tired, I miss home.
  • When they arrive Katie finally decides to cheer up and begins to think this might be fun. She then she races her brother to the fields to begin their long days work.

  • When they begin to work, Katie becomes tired and begs her brother to let them stop, not knowing that he can't control that. Her brother yet again reminds her that they need to do this for their family and makes her continue her work.
  • I'm tired, can we please stop?
  • Finally, they arrive to their temporary home on the farm after a long day of work. Katie is still very tired and begins to cry because she misses their family and home. This makes John feel very bad about the whole situation, but he doesn't say anything to upset her.
