The narrator, Montresor sees his friend Fortunato at a carnival. He then tells him that he has Amontillado and a pipe. Fortunato is drunk at the moment and is in disbelief. He then asks if he can go to Montresor's vaults to go and taste the Amontillado.

Montresor explains to us why he is going to murder his friend. Fortunato insulted Montresor. So Montresor made a plan to kill Fortunato. He will be very nice to him and lure him to his vaults. Where he will murder Fortunato.
Rising Action
Resolution
Montresor then lures Fortunato down into the vaults. As they keep walking through the vaults Montresor keeps asking Fortunato if he would like to turn back. Fortunato is coughing severely. Fortunato keeps drinking wine to ease the cough and is persistant on getting to the Amontillado..
The two then reach their destination. But instead of their being Amontillado, their is a hole in the wall. Montresor then chains up Fortunato in the hole. He then begins sealing the wall up with bricks.
Montresor keeps laying the bricks. He lays the last few bricks. As he does that Fortunato screams at him to stop. But it is too late, Montresor has already constituted his revenge.
Montresor then walks away, his plan a success. The only sound left is Fortunato's jester bells jingling in the vaults. Montresor replaces the bones of the crypt. He claims that no one has disturbed the crypt for 50 years. His plan was a success.
