  • Dred Scott Decision, 1857 Camden Taylor
  • A man named Dred Scott went to a court. He filed a lawsuit to become a free person. The case happened in the St. Louis Circuit Court. His former master died and he wanted freedom (no one owned him). The court ruled against him and made laws destroying the rights of all black people.
  • I am revoking your rights as a citizen!
  • Abraham Lincoln became president of the US. The South became angry because they didn't vote for him. The election happened in Washington D.C. He got voted in by mostly northern states since he only appeared on their ballots. The South reacted by leaving the Union to be independent.
  • Lincoln was Elected, 1860Camden Taylor
  • I'm president!
  • The Southern Militia fired on Fort Sumter while it was unready. It is located in Charleston Harbor on a small man made island. Two groups were fighting over control of the base which is why it was attacked. Abraham Lincoln responded by sending troops to fight them.
