  • Ten miles ahead of them was a towering black mountain spotted with snow.
  • We´ve done it
  • Chapter 17: The Cave
  • Chapter 18: The Alps of the Southern Ocean
  • They were out of Elephant Island, but they had disasters because one of the casks of fresh water felled and banged, so they reduced the use of water, this caused that they had red eyes inflamed and cracked lips, but they had hope that if calculations were correct they were eighty miles from South Georgia Island. Then, the men were in for another storm with hurricane, snow and rain, so the wind were driving them toward the rocky coast. Later, they discovered that the hurricane had foundered a 500-ton steamer from Buenos Aires. They didn´t have water, so they found rocks and stayed there.
  • The men were tired, so they rested on rocks, meanwhile Crean reported a cave, so the 6 men went to the cave to get well. Then, they found albatross chicks and elephant seal, so they ate and slept. After that, Shackleton knew that he had to make something because the crew was waiting for him, so he, Worsley and Crean crossed South Georgia Island and leaved McCarthy, McNeish and Vincent because they needed to rest more time.
  • Shackleton, Worsley and Crean climbed toward a pass through ankle-deep snow, to avoid tiring they made a halt for fifteen minutes. They were hiking for sixteen hours, but there were still miles to go before the whaling station. Finally, they were in the Whaling Station and they talked to the factory manager who was surprised. They were told that the Aurora, the relief ship that had been sent to him, had met a similar fate to Endurance. They received the boat Sanson to look for their three friends in the cave. They also took the James Caird with them. By that time many people in London knew that they were safe.
