Storyboard Text

  • Hello everybody. My name is Elina Withers and I'll be showing you around the small town of Corners Grove today. We'll be observing a young girl named Pansy Rendan. In this scene she is in fourth grade. Now, just to be clear, if I hadn't known that what happens to Pansy would be beneficial to her in the long run, I would have intervened right away. But I don't because I foresee the monumental changes she'll make one day.
  • Mocking, squeaky voice: How are you doing today Pansy?Oh, that's right, you don't talk unless it's absolutely necessary.
  • It's for the better though, nobody wants to listen to your dumb voice. Besides, you never have anything good to say anyways.
  • There is a total of 42 students in Pansy's grade. Half are girls and half are boys. Pansy is the smartest one.
  • Everyone else has a partner. Why doesn't anybody want to be with me? Just because I talk differently doesn't mean I don't have good ideas.
  • 180°
  • Oh no! Not-so-velvet voice just got bumped. What is she gonna do? Go crying for help? We all know that wouldn't work though because nobody wants to hear her, not even the teachers.
  • Bell rings and kids come pouring into the hallways.
  • That's Pansy, the girl with the squeaky voice, getting on the bus right now. You don't want to get stuck sitting next to her or else people will think you're weird.
  • I drove the bus for the Corners Grove K-12 School District for 23 years. I've given 8,642 rides to over 1,500 students and driven dozens of different sports teams to their competitions. I transported the Corners Grove High School softball team to state in 1994. The whole town was disappointed when they lost in extra innings, but were proud of the girls for being good sports about it. Nobody ever sat by Pansy on the bus, but I always made sure to welcome her with a smile as she boarded.
  • Why does everybody hate me? It's not my fault that I can't speak normal. I've done nothing wrong to them. Am I really such a bad person? If only I had a nice, smooth voice, as soft as the trickling water in a creek flowing gently over pebbles.
  • You're welcome Pansy. Enjoy it, but don't get too caught up in social media.
  • Hey honey, we have a surprise for you.
  • Two years later:
  • Now that you're in sixth grade, we thought it was time you had a phone.
  • Oh my goodness! Thank you! It's just what I wanted.
  • I won't. Love you.
