- Man vs. ManThis is man vs. man because Brian's mom is with another man and Brian is angry because of that. Brian and his friend Terry are riding their bikes and Brian sees his mom with a strange man in a different station wagon. On page 30 it says, "His mother. She was sitting in a station wagon, a strange station wagon. He saw her and she did not see him. There was a man in the car."
- Man vs. NatureThis is man vs. nature because Brian is getting bit a lot by mosquitoes. The mosquitoes bite and other black flies and starts to make Brian's face swell. On page 34 and 35 it says, " Mosquitoes and some small black flies he had never seen before. All biting, chewing, taking from him. In moments his eyes were swollen shut and his face puffy and round to match his battered forehead."
