- After several years Stella is returning to the town of Mallard, "She Knew what she had to do; tell Desiree to call her girl off. She had to go back to Mallard (Bennett 305). Stella believes that Jude is the reason why Kennedy runs off to Rome find herself. She returns with the intent of getting Desiree to tell Jude to stop contacting Kennedy.

- Stella Sees Kennedy and Cindy playing with each other and says the same thing she'd heard her mother say ,"Because we don't play with niggers," (Bennett 165). Stella often says discriminatory things to keep up with the fact that she is white passing . She does not want people in the neighborhood to find out that she is black as well.
