  • What does the character look like?
  • Jude is described as very black. Bennett writes,“She was black. Blueblack. No, so black she looked purple. Black as coffee, asphalt, outer space, black as the beginning and end of the world”(Bennett 94). Jude’s skin color is often compared to the deepest black things one can think of. In reality, Jude is a very dark-skinned girl and her complexion has a bluish undertone making her appear darker.
  • Stella effects the outcome of Desiree's life. Bennett writes, "Then one evening, a year later, Desiree came home from Dixie Laundry to find an empty apartment. All of Stella’s clothes, all of her things, gone. Like she’d never been there at all. There was a note left behind in Stella’s careful hand: Sorry, honey, but I’ve got to go my own way (Bennett 69). After Stella left she impacted Desiree by forcing her to be on her own knowing that Desiree was a dependent person. This later caused Desiree to be in a abusive situation with her husband.

  • Kennedy thinks about how her mother’s lies. Bennett writes,“In Opelousas Kennedy! The same place I grew up” (Bennett 269). While Kennedy and Stella are having a conversation about her mom, Kennedy thinks about how her mother's story isn’t adding up. Which makes her think about how she can potentially be a liar.
