While developing her plan of care and exploring some non-pharmacological therapies for Tom's knee, the nurse gets a prescription for ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, from the Dr.
Tom is happy his pain is easing up with the help of the ibuprofen and that he gets to go home. The nurse teaches Tom about the RICE method to help his knee while he is at home. The RICE method is: Step 1: Rest. This helps the injury heal and prevent any further damage. Step 2: Ice. This helps the swelling. You should ice the area for 15-20 minutes at a time. Step 3: Compression. Wrapping the injured area helps prevent any swelling. Make sure not to wrap it too tightly. Step 4: Elevate. Can reduce pain and swelling. keep injury elevated above the heart.

Tom remembered his patient education from his nurse. When he got home he took his last dose of ibuprofen, laid down in bed and propped his leg up after icing and wrapping it.
Two weeks later, Tom goes for a follow up. He tells his nurse he did the RICE method just like she taught him and he is now pain free and the swelling in his knee had gone down. The Nurse is happy because her plan was implemented and was successful for Tom.
