Storyboard Text

  • September 14th, 1975 (Maori Language Day) - Led by the Dame Whina Cooper holding her granddaughter Irina, 50 marchers start the 1000 km walk from Te Hapua to Wellington.
  • September 23rd, 1975 - Hundreds of protesters march over the Auckland Harbour bridge, which was built on Ngati Whatua land with no compensation. This part of the march brought attention to Ngati Whatua land specifically, as well as Te Roopu o te Matakite’s larger goal.
  • October 6th, 1975 - The protesters reach Poutu Marae in Shannon, taking time to remember the spirituality of the march; taking time to remember the mana of their ancestors. They take part in sacred ceremonies at both this marae and many others, most of them supporting their movement.
  • October 10th, 1975 - In response to Maori claims of breaches to the treaty, the Waitangi Tribunal is formed by the sitting Labour government. However, the march is not yet over.

  • October 13th, 1975 - The protesters have reached Porirua, hours away from Parliament. They have chanted; they have sung; they have walked in silence.
  • October 13th, 1975 - With over 4000 people supporting those who have marched the entire length, Whina Cooper tearfully rejoices as they present the petition to Parliament. The march has finished.
