One of the most famous events of the American Civil War was the Battle of Gettysburg(1861-65). It lasted 3 days, from July 1 to July 3, 1863, in Gettysburg, PA. It's about 30 miles south of the town of Harrisburg. The Confederates partly attempted to invade the northern states and make the civilians withdraw Union support. It was the most gory and deadliest battle in the war. The Union's victory ended the opposing side's march, forcing them and their army to retreat.

By the time it was May 1863, the Union Army had lost some important battles. The Union population was starting to get more dissatisfied because of the Union's lack of progress, with a peace movement growing. The Confederates, mainly in Virginia where most of the combat was, had situations where they were unable to support the armies with necessities like food.
I have no idea to be honest... but why haven't we?
Why haven't we made any progress yet?!
What should we do?
Our armies are running low on food...

Robert E. Lee came and was hoping to take resources from Pennsylvania, turn the people against the Union, and ease Virginia from his army(1807-70). So he decided to invade and hopefully capture Harrisburg. he had about 75K soldiers, divided into 3 corps. The Union soldiers had met the Confederates at Gettysburg on the 1st of July. Almost 90K troops were under G. George C. Meade(1815-72), who fought painfully for 3 days to stop the Confederate invasion. With many soldiers dying on both sides, Lee retreated having more than 20K either captured, harmed, or even dead, on the 4th of July, Independence Day. The Union Army also lost about 23K to the Confederates. The event of the Battle of Gettysburg was a humiliating loss for the South and was considered a turning point of the American Civil War. Although Meade was blamed for not chasing Lee and his army, his army received recognition in return for stopping the invasion.
