Hayes was a very honest person. He was the governor of Ohio, before being nominated to run for president. He was known as a "champion of political reform". He had the average views on reconstruction.
Compromise of 1877:
Tilden was the governor of New York and was nominated to run for president. He was widely known for fighting political corruption in New York City.
Hayes beat Tilden in the election. The controversy in this election was that twenty disputed electoral votes came late from a few states and left the results in doubt. At first, Tilden was winning the election, until Congress took a vote on who should get those. Resulting in Hayes winning.
The compromise of 1877 was made to settle the election difficulties, although it favored the South. They withdraw troops from the South and Democrats promised to maintain African American rights. Hayes did not want the government to be as involved and wanted to leave some stuff up to the people.
