- In 1848, Marshall found shining flecks of gold in the tailrace of the sawmill he was building in partnership with John Sutter. The discovery in present-day Coloma sparked California's famous gold rush and led to the greatest voluntary mass migration of people in the Western Hemisphere
- The news of gold brought approximately 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad.
- In order to understand the significance of the Gold Rush, it is important to look back at the events that led to the discovery of gold in California. One of the most important events was the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The Mexican-American War was a war of national aggression to gain territory.
- The discovery of the precious metal at Sutter's Mill in January 1848 was a turning point in global history. The rush for gold redirected the technologies of communication and transportation and accelerated and expanded the reach of the American and British Empires
- The gold rush helped increase the population, which helped bring social, cultural development and democratic government.
