Dad! You don't understand! She doesn't act different towards you, only to me! She's really rude too.
DEVON! Enough of that. You know that Lily is that fluent in English, and she is very kind! Don't speak about her that way.
Finally! His liver is going to deteriorate soon, and he'll be dead by the time we're in Vietnam. I can finally give Devon to someone where he'll be of more use...
Dad... I can't believe you've gotten this sick. It has to be Lily's doing. You've only been getting worse by drinking her tea.
It's a new boy. I wonder if he knows why we were put here, and what we're meant to do. It's not like we'll be able to escape one day anyway, so he'll definitely find out.
Devon and his father are talking about a Vietnamese woman named Lily. It was always only Devon and his father, all until Lily came along. Ever Since she was there, everything has been changing. She started dating Devon's father, and even brought her kids! Her attitude wasn't any better either. Devon really couldn't handle her anymore.
You know Devon, when we reach America, there is a foster home that you'll be put into. It has really nice people, but if you don't like it, we'll understand. Give them a try.
Yeah, maybe...
Devon's dad has becoming so sick to the point where he was unable to do almost anything. This caused everyone in the household to fly to Vietnam. Devon became suspicious of the strange "herbal" tea that Lily was giving his dad, and tried to convince him that she's making him worse, but to no avail. One day, in Lily's house in Vietnam, Devon didn't see his father, and woke up in a completely different room.
Hey Mom! ... Yeah... Joy took us to.... Really? Umm- I'll ask. Thanks mom...
Devon had woken up in the basement of a restaurant he and Lily had dined in previously. Afterwards, Devon was heartbroken to find out that his father has passed away. When he wakes up in the basement, he is reminded of that terrible news that occurred prior. In this basement, he meets 3 boys who have been trapped in Long's (the owner's) basement along with him. What is horrifying is that he has been sold, was in Cambodia, and was a victim of human trafficking.
What you have to remember was that it wasn't your fault.
Trust me. I've been ashamed and I blamed myself too when it happened. That was until I started to feel more accepted by the people surrounding me, and when I heard the wise words from my old foster home-
The children from Long's restaurant were rescued by a undercover police officer Devon saw. They were all brought to a safe house, where they were finally recognized and treated like human beings. The police officer that brought them there was originally sent to find Devon from America, where he was deemed as a missing child. The detective and Devon leave the safe house and the others, to go to a foster home that would take Devon in.
Devon reaches the foster home he was placed in, and moves into a room. He goes back to school, and reconnects with his best friend, Vic. Along his way of recovering from what he has been through, Devon is reached out by his biological mother. They talk for a bit here and there, and Devon grows a little close to her each time. He then moves out of the foster home to live with her and her family.
" I know there are a lot of people to cheer me on, and that there are a lot of people I can help." Devon says this towards the end of the novel, as he wants to help others with what he has been put through. Devon is still trying to get stronger after the mental and physical embarrassment and torture he has been through, but is slowly building his life back up again with his friends, and more importantly, his new family.
