- In chapter 7 of the outsiders, a crowd of reporters come and ask too many questions too fast, Darry comes in and tells them that Ponyboy is in no shape to answer the questions, and finally the reporters slow down their questions.
- In chapter 8, Ponyboy and Two-Bit Mathews go to see Johnny and Dally in the hospital, they ask him if he wants anything, Johnny replies by whispering and says, "Can you get me the book.".
- In chapter 9 of the outsiders, Ponyboy and Dally go to meet Johnny after they won the rumble, they reach the hospital and see Johnny in critical condition, Dally tell him that they won the rumble, and Johnny tells ponyboy to Stay gold and then the pillow sinks,
- In chapter 10 of The Outsiders, Dally calls the gang and tells them that he has robbed a store and that he is on the run. Th gang runs out to see what's going on and they see Dally collapsed on the pavement dead.
