Charles Ramsdell suggests they draw lots to kill one of their people so the rest can survive. The short straw went to Owen Coffin. Pollard was extremely unsatisfied with Owen Coffin being sacrificed, and this was where Pollard volunteered to take his place. The short straw fell to Owen Coffin, and when the captain offers to take his place, Owen Coffin says no.
Chases Sea Journal
George Pollard- The Captain, waits too long to order the ship to turn away from the squall, and he rolls the Essex almost ninety degrees onto her side. As he determined his next actions, he was open to suggestions from the crew.

This is where the whale attacks the Essex and the crew... The sperm whale successfully sunk the Essex...
The Island Stop-Henderson Island
Chase maintained a strict discipline in food provisions. He transfers the bread to his sea chest so he can keep close watch over it.
Dauphin!!
On the ship, Chase begins to keeps a sea journal with sheets of paper and a pencil. Chase did this to keep track of position. A sailor needs to reckon both longitude and latitude.
Captain Pollard decides to give up the idea of recording longitude, since they don't have the equipment to measure it, and he does not know how to use the alternative method of lunar observation.
Pollard convinces Chase that they must attempt to find water. Pollard finally steps his foot down, and enforces his word. Chase is so impatient to get to South America. He thinks they are wasting their time on the island if there is no water.
Pollard’s whaleship/crew is spotted by a boat named the “Dauphin.”
