  • Understanding IDEA with Megan and Rachel!
  • Slide: 2
  • Hey Rachel, I can't believe it is the beginning of the school year again. Let's get going to our first professional development. What's it about?
  • We have to review that IDEA policy since we have a new special education director. Let's go!
  • Slide: 3
  • Hello all! I am Tom, your new Special Education director. The first topic we are going to talk about is the IDEA policy.
  • Slide: 4
  • IDEA stands for Individauls with Disabilities Education Act and is a law that states all children will receive appropriate education (intervention, special education) regardless of disabilities (U.S. Department of Education, 2004)
  • Let's first talk about what IDEA is at the foundational level, does anyone know? Yes, Megan?
  • Slide: 5
  • One benefit of IDEA is that it allows students with disabilities to recieve education with accomodations to prepare them for the real world, workforce, etc. It can also help prepare these students for further education if that is their wish. Educators also benefit from this policy as they received training in the area of special education strategies. (U.S. Department of Education, 2004). A
  • Excellent. Rachel, can you list some of the benefits and limits of this law?
  • Slide: 6
  • The biggest limit to this policy is that resources supporting it are based mainly in federal or state funding. Therefore a school that receives less financial support will have less tools to support the children creating an inequitable balance of learning.
  • Well done. I will now have you get into break out groups to discuss the effects of this law, and recommendations for advocation and adherence.
  • Slide: 7
  • This law has helped my daughter so much. It has given her more confidence in school, my husband and I have learned more about her needs and her school has provided so many intervention and special education resources for her. It also helped us place her in a cognitivly impared classroom in an appropriate school that matched her needs which our local school district busses her to. This law has helped get our daughter the appropriate support and forced her school to provide what is needed.
  • Megan, your stepdaughter receives special education, how does this law effect you?
  • Slide: 8
  • Well, in order to adhere to the law, they have to follow her very extensive IEP which she has had since first grade and lays out all her accomadations. They also follow the least restrictive environment theory by ensuring she attends classes outside of her CI room (IDEA Compliance|OSEP Ideas that Work, n.d.) In addition to the IEP and LRE, the school also sends teachers to multiple trainings on intervention and special education strateiges.
  • What do you mean forced? How has the school supported your daughter?
  • Slide: 9
  • Ok, but we still need to think of some ways to help advocate for these students to tell Tom.
  • Let's start heading back to the computer room.
  • Slide: 10
  • I would first suggest they learn research laws and their students specific disabilities, make sure to speak in words that the students respect, always promote inclusion in every activity and be patient. Nothing happens instantly (Miller, 2022).
  • If you were helping educators advocate for and help a student needing IDEA support, what would you suggest?
  • Slide: 11
  • I hope you all had a very productive breakout room. Are there any questions? Yes, Rachel?
  • Why are we spending so much time learning about this law and its different aspects?
  • Slide: 12
  • That's a great question, understanding the why is always important. Diversity, inclusivity, integrity and developing a high moral character is crucial in an education setting. By supporting and implementing the IDEA law we ensure we are promoting a safe, inclusive and progressive environment for all students to learn regardless of disabilities. We not only want to increase academics, but also their moral character.
  • Slide: 13
  • Thank you all for attending today's professional development. Please let me know if you have any questions.
