  • The end result was that Rome defeated Carthage and went on to dominate both the western and eastern halves of the Mediterranean.
  • Rome was able to gain its empire in large part by extending some form of citizenship to many of the people it conquered
  • So how did Rome winning the Punic Wars positively effect them.

  • Military expansion drove economic development, bringing enslaved people and loot back to Rome

  • Well, large numbers of slaves were pouring into Rome, either as prisoners of war or purchased by the new wealthy class of Romans
