The Great Depression was the period between 1929 and 1939 when the United States entered severe economic deterioration and decline.
Hello, my name is James and I used to work at this factory but lost my job in 1933 when the plant shut down. Things started to get dark when in 1929 the stock market crashed, my company suffered from this and had to lay off hundreds of workers. This made me very concerned about my and my family's future.
The first years were very rough as many of my coworkers were laid off and some even committed suicide. My town had more homeless and poverty than I had ever seen people I knew were getting kicked out of their own homes. At the plant, we were producing a quarter of what we used to produce. The longer the depression lasted the worse it got and more entered poverty and homelessness.
Hoover generally opposed a direct role for the federal government in the economy.
Throughout the first years of the depression with Hoover as president, there was no direct relief from the federal government and that made many of my friends and coworkers feel abandoned by president Hoover who refused to give direct aid or policies which would've greatly assisted them throughout this rough period. Many felt as though Hoover was to blame for the severity of the depression and for the lengthy recovery process as his hands-off approach was disliked by many.
