The Fossil record is a way to date extinct animals through there bones and there remains. Biogeography is a process where an animal looks different from another animal from its same species.
Because of this two animals different environments and climates they live in they are very different too eachother to adapt to a certain niche of there environment.
The leopard has adadpted to its aborial lifestyle by adapting to have a longer tails to be able to balance better on trees and drag there prey up trees to evade bigger predators.
The jaguar has adapted to its environemnt because of the specific details that they have adapted to, for example the Jaguar has developed a bone crushing bite to bite through a caimans tough thick skin.

Homotherium lived in Africa 4 million years ago, Homotherium went extinct because of what we would call modern day leopards becuase of there advanced hunting strategies.
The leopards and jaguars common ancestor is the homotherium, they lived in packs which is very different from how leopards hunt.
