- In Rajkot, he took a job where he had to represent a company that was involved in a complicated lawsuit in South Africa. Then in 1893 Gandhi moved to South Africa.

- It was in South Africa where Gandhi started to experience discrimination. It were the Dutch settlers (Boers) that discriminated him for being a dark-skinned Indian.
- At a railway station in South Africa, the railway officials tried to send Gandhi to third-class coach even though he had bought first-class tickets. He was removed from the train by the police when he refused to get off.

- In a few years, the British fought the Boers over the control of South Africa. During this time, Gandhi sympathised with the Boers, but sided with the British for his belief of 'The British Empire exists for the better of the world'.
