- A theme that is developing is secrecy can lead to frayed relationships. This develops, by the author using Greta and June's relationship flaws to enhance the theme, the author also uses the absence of the parents and the time period to show how the theme is progressed.
- Theme Development 3
- Greta and June are constantly fighting, and not getting a long. That is in part by Greta's jealousy. "... Maybe I want to be like you," (54.13). Greta wants to be like June, and Greta knows how loved June is and she wants that. Greta knows that June is keeping secrets and meeting with someone, and Greta wants that as well, and the secrecy is driving her mad. The secrets that the two of them are keeping is putting a strain on their relationship.
- Thematic Prediction
- The parents are also often absent because of tax seasons allowing for June to keep the secret's easier. " 'We're orphan's again. It's orphan season,' "(3.16). With the parents being away so much it is easier for June to keep her secrets. If her mother ever finds out about June seeing Toby, their relationship may become very tense because of the mother's dislike of Toby. This helps advance the theme that secrets can lead to frayed relationship's because June not allowing her mom to know about her seeing Toby will effect the mom emotionally causing problems with the family.
- We're orphans again.
- The time period being in the 1980's is helpful for June keeping her secret because there is no social media, and no hand held phones. "... It was 1986,..." (1.4). The time period where AIDS is going around as well as the technology wasn't quite as advanced helped June to keep her secret. The only way to spy on someone at that time is going through their room or simply following them. Which, in fact, Greta did do, leading to a fight between the two. The theme is helped here because of the time period allowing June to keep her secret's well, but it did lead to a fight between her and Greta over June's keeping secrets.
- A prediction for the theme, secret's may lead to frayed relationship's, is that June's parents find out, particularly the mom, and she gets angry with June and Toby and does not allow June to see Toby anymore. The mother may hold the grudge and June's relationship with her will fall apart because trust is huge in relationships. I do think though, that Greta will forgive June and they will get closer before Greta heads off to be in Annie, but as of now they are not friends as all because June kept secrets.
