A problem faced by the soldiers was no matter how sick they were or how cold they were they always had to be at military training or fighting force.
Another problem faced by the soldiers was they had a very limited supply. For example meals such as "firecake," a mixture of water and flour. This would sometimes be supplemented by pepper pot soup, a stew of beef tripe and vegetables.
