  • Well I guess I have no choice.
  • Forced to hand it up!
  • You have to hand over the Congo to us, The Belgium Government.
  • Coup!
  • I, Joseph Mobuto has staged a coup and I am now in power!
  • Stock market crash?
  • There was a crash in the Stock market! I am in debt.
  • Leopold essentially owned Congo, and he ruled it as a private fiefdom from 1884 until 1906, when he was forced to turn it over to the colony of the Belgium Government. From 1906 until independence in 1960, the territory was known as the Belgian Congo, and while the Belgians were far less brutal than Leopold's agents had been, life under the Belgium was not good. Then There was a sudden decolonization in the Congo, they were unprepared to be independent.

  • In 1965, a former army sergeant and journalist named Joseph Mobutu staged a coup and seized control of the government. Mobutu was very corrupt, manipulating, and controlling. He used the clientelism/cronyism method where he would do favors for his friends and followers.
  • The Rwanda's Hutu President has died
  • There was a huge crash of commodity prices, including copper that followed the Vietnam war and plunged Zaire/Congo into debt. In 1975 Zaire/Congo’s debt totaled to 887 dollars. Zaire kept getting loans until 1990 where his debt rose to 10 million dollars.

  • 1990 when TheTutsi-Led Rwandan Patriotic front began to cross the border into Rwanda from their bases in Uganda. Between 1990-1994 approximately 20,000 people were killed and 1.5 million displaced by this conflict.
  • In 1994 The plane of Rwanda's Hutu president was shot down and Rwandan Hutus began murdering Rwanda Tutsis, killing 800,000 and a million people in three months.This increased the attacks on Rwanda and then under Paul Kagame, they succeeded in taking the country, leading to over 2 million people fleeing, most of them to easterm Zaire/Congo.
  • The Alliance des Forces Démocratiques pour la Libération. The AFDL was made up of Zairans and would do dirty work, killing Hutu refugees for Kagame. It would appear to be a domestic uprising against Mobutu. On May 29th, 1997, The victorious AFDL leader Laurent Kabila was sworn president of the newly renamed Democratic republic of Congo. Mobutu fled to Morocco and died months later.
