The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is its own worst enemy.
One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is that mankind is its own worst enemy. First, the Neighbors blindly accuse each other of being monsters because of random abnormal events that happen to the neighbors, this shows that people can really hate or assume someone else is bad because of one bad thing or event. Next, Charlie decides to shoot a shadowy object moving towards them because of fear and suspicion, this turns out to be a human figure which makes Charlie an enemy. This takes a human life and proves fear can really get to someone and cause someone to hurt other people. Last but not least, the Neighbors use violence and fight each other because of the assumptions and abnormal things happening around them, this shows that close friends/neighbors are hurting each other and fighting each other because of assumptions and accusations. This proves that even best friends can turn on each other and tear their friendship apart. In conclusion, mankind is tearing each other and themselves apart for no good reason.
