Offred is the protagonist of the book. She is captured by the gilead and trained to become a handmaid. throughout the book, we see Offreds will to survive for the love she has for her husband and daughter who were taken from her when the regimes began. Even though Offred stays submissive to the regimes and her role as a handmaid, she continues to stay true to her old self and not fall into the brain wash of the new society she now lives in. She does what she can to survive in her new environment.

The commander is a part of the highest ranking men in the Gilead regimes. He lives in a house with his wife, Offred and other servants of the regimes. The commanders role is to impregnate Offred. Even though he holds so much power over the others, it is clear throughout the book that he himself feels guilty for what he has to do. We see this when he brings Offred into his office and gives her gifts. The commander shows that he himself misses life before the regime began.

Aunt Lydia is one of the aunts in charge of looking after the handmaid's and helps them with their "re-education" in the red centre. She is a cold, harsh women who promotes the ideas of the Gilead regimes. She influences and shapes the handsmiads tales beliefs and codes of behaviour through there roles. On odd occasions she presents herself as nice but usually punishes the handmaid's in a cruel manner for their insubordination.
