The neon light of the city flickered against the rain slicked streets as Daniel ran paced outside the store, his nerves churning. He clasped his hands together. He tried to ignore the gnawing anxiety in his gut.Daniel had no motive for being outside yet he felt obligated to comply with the stranger except he was supposed to meet a man outside. The guys scowl was barely visible.

Once Daniel crossed the street, he had to stammer his greeting to the guy. The man was in a exotic French coat, watching him with an attentive gaze. "You have it?" the man said, deliberately calm. Daniel was about to pull it out of his jacket but There was movement in the tunnel. Agitated, Daniel tried to persist. The guy signaled him to wait. The tension between them felt thick, like a rope entwined with distrust and necessity. A grouse bird came out of nowhere and scared Daniel. Daniel started to think incredulous about seeing a person in the alley.

A gust of wind sent the papers skittering along the pavement, and Daniel wistfully thought of a different life. The stranger finally exhaled and motioned form him to continue, as if deciding there was no immediate threat. Daniel handed over the package feeling an invisible weight lift from his shoulders. The man studied it for a moment, then gave a stupendous grin that didn't reach his eyes. "You did well" he man said. But as Daniel turned to leave, he couldn't shake the feeling that, somehow he had just made things worse.
