  • Richard was taken by boat along the Thames to meet the Peasants leaders. The crowd were angry andshouted abuse at him. Wat Tyler and all of the other rebels were surprisingly nice to the King though; theyknelt down before him and said ‘We will not have any other King than you’. The rebels explained theirissues and said they didn’t want to pay the new poll tax and wanted paying more money. To everyone’ssurprise, the King agreed! The peasants had challenged the King and won…..or had they?Around the time of this meeting, a group of rebels broke into the Tower of London and beheaded theArchbishop of Canterbury and one of Richards’ closest advisors. They stuck their heads on spikes for all tosee.
  • We will not have any other king than you.
  • Wat Tyler
  • Youshall have no leader except me. I am your King. Be peaceful.
  • The King met the rebels and their leader, Wat Tyler, again onthis day. On this day, he had 75 Knights with him. They facedaround 25,000 peasants. Wat Tyler asked the King to divide upall of the Church lands to the peasants. The king agreed. Tylerthen asked for some beer, drank some and spat the rest on thefloor next to the King. This was a terrible insult. Tyler had gonetoo far and shown a lack of respect. The King was extremelyangry and ordered his Knights to capture him. The Mayor ofLondon then killed him.The rebels were so shocked that one of their leaders was dead. Some looked ready to attack. Richard stood tall and said ‘Youshall have no leader except me. I am your King. Be peaceful.’Almost immediately the situation was calmed and thepeasants began to go home. But King Richard didn’t keep his promises. It looked as if the revolt had beena total failure.
