Storyboard Text

  • Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
  • This line is saying that love is something that isn't always there. It's not all there is. This line is a good and important start to the sonnet because it shows the audience what will be talked about and how love is between two people.
  • Love can not fill the the thickened lung with breath
  • This line is referring to how love is special and important to many and how people desire love so deeply, they crave it. It is saying that we should live and enjoy love while it lasts because it can't be the only thing that we depend on. The couple here are walking and laughing together in their prime.
  • TONE:Tone in writing is the way a writer can get the message of a poem, passage, or anything across by using certain words and feelings in their work. In this sonnet specifically, Vincent Millay uses a dark tone and emotional pull to make the love of the them to be more prominent and make the audience feel what she is feeling. The tone that can be identified in this sonnet would be considered sincere, serious, and somewhat sad. Without the tone of this sonnet that she used, it would be lacking the appeal and it wouldn't have the same deep meaning that comes across.
  • TURN IN THE SONNET:A turn in a poem or sonnet is when the poem changes at some point in the writing. Often times it changes tones or feeling. This is detectable by the audience. In the sonnet I am analyzing, the turn appears on line 10 when Millay says, "Pinned down by pain and moaning for release". I identified this as the turn because in the beginning of the poem the author is talking about love and how important it is to most people. Then when the turn takes place, the poem goes in a different direction and talks about how painful love can be and also explains why love needs to be appreciated while it can.
  • I might be driven to sell your love for peace
  • This line after the turn shows how the mood of the poem has changed. When the author is saying this, she is showing the audience that when you are in love you need to cherish the person and appreciate what you have before it ends. In this line, the feeling being talked about is how people feel when they are experiencing heart break. People want to feel peace rather than the love they had.
  • Or trade the memory of this night for food
  • In this line the author is showing how deeply the love the desire is. The audience is influenced to feel the way the author does about love. Millay says that she would trade the memory of this night for food, showing that love is a priority over food. Love will be put first no matter what state she is in.
  • THEME:The theme of this poem is that love is something everyone desires, but in the end it turns out to be important and a necessity for the people in the poem.
