- Lisa the sky is polluted from gases called 'TRAPS'.
- Traffic-related air pollution is one of the main contributors to air pollution, also known as ‘TRAP’. TRAP is a combination of particles and gasses that includes gasses such as ozone, noxious gasses and volatile organic compounds (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2023).
- Jason what happened to the sky? I was out for a walk and saw the sky is grey instead of blue? Surely the factory can't be this bad?
- Noxious gasses are emissions released from motor vehicles and industrial processes including Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Sulfur Oxides and Nitrogen Monoxides (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2023).
- When Fossil fuels are burned they release toxic pollutants such as Nitrogen Oxide which make it more difficult for humans to breathe and can result in respiratory illnesses or heart failure (AQI, 2019). The more fossil fuels are burned, the more Carbon Dioxide they release which can result in more smog in the air and acid rain being produced (AQI, 2019). According to one source “Coal-fired power stations alone account for 35% of harmful mercury emissions in the US.” (AQI, 2019., para. 4 ).
- Fossil fuels which power our cars and transportation sector contribute to air pollution.
- With the rise of global warming, wildfires are an increasing massive concern of air pollution!
- The burning of farm residue when released in the air can combine with harmful chemicals and pollen to form smog (AQI, 2019). Smog reduces the air quality making it more difficult to breathe, reducing visibility and irritates the respiratory tract (AQI, 2019). Soot, dust and smoke particles from wildfires can stay in the air for multiple days following the wildfire, which has a damaging effect on air quality (AQI, 2019).
