Storyboard Text

  • Hello, my name is Mary. Hello, my name is Claire. We live in Montgomery, Alabama.
  • I live with my Mom, Dad, and my older brother Tommy.
  • I live with Mom, Dad, my older brother James, and my little sister April.
  • I love going to see the pictures movies. One day I saw a family in the movie pictures, but then I saw them go through the back door and not go from the front door. I don't know why?
  • I love going to see the movie pictures as well, but I don't like having to go through the back door and not the front like everyone else.
  • After the movie, I ask my mom why we have to go through the back every time we go see the movies? My mom yes its because of the Jim Crow laws.
  • I ask my mom, why do certain people have to go through the back door at the movies and not the front like us. My mom said it is of Segregation laws.
  • Our parents explain to us what Segregation was.My mother told me, there is a Jim Crow law to separate people from their skin color. There are signs in place where it says “White” and “Color”. Because of this law, we are not allowed to break this law. I don’t like this.
  • An example of segregation is people going through the back and I get to go through the front door. I don’t like this because it was wrong because we should exclude people based on skin color.
  • I remember watching tv one day, and I saw they were talking about how Ruby Bridges being the first to desegregate an all white school. I thought that was really cool and because Ruby desegregated an all white school, now I am able to go to the same school as everyone else. It doesn’t matter if the kids are white or black.
  • One day I saw a lot of black students in my class. I made a new friend, and her name is Mary! She has become my new best friend.I made a new friend and her name is Claire! I am able to meet my new best friend.
  • Many people didn’t like the idea of mixing children in school, or at all. It wasn’t till 1964 when school was starting to be more integrated. But just because segregation has ended, there are still people then and today who still want to separate people based on their skin color.
  • There are many people who fought for equal rights like Martin Luther King Jr.Rosa Parks, and many others. It shouldn’t matter what your skin color is but only what kind of person you are. If segregation didn’t end, we would've been best friends.
  • THE END!
