- In Massachusetts Bay Colony, we enjoy four seasons: warm springs that are perfect for planting, hot summers, cool falls with their vibrant colors and bountiful harvests, and very cold winters. Our winters may be harsh, but they kill insects and germs which help protect us from disease.We have dense forests that are perfect for lumbering. Sell wood to build houses and ships. We have many rivers which allow us to trap most months of the year. We also have many harbors with easy access to the ocean for fishing, trading, and whaling. Cape Cod is named after our abundant codfish! Our whale oil is a valuable commodity in every colony and used to make soap, candles, and lamp oil! You can even farm your own land and produce crops like corn, squash, beans, onions, or plant apple orchards!The Pilgrims landed here in 1620 and were followed by the Puritans in 1630. We offer freedom from religious persecution by the Church of England! We also have a more democratic system of government than many places in Europe. We hold town meetings to discuss and vote on local issues.
